For an entire generation, Harry Potter was a series of books that introduced people to mythology and the world of magic, and for almost a decade, it created the best adult films of all time. With the reboot, HBO Max plans to introduce a completely new generation to the world of Hogwarts with the Chosen One, who must save the world from an evil dark wizard with dreams of ruling the world.
However, it’s fair to say that many fans of the wizarding world have moved on from Harry Potter, but still yearn for the same magic. So, for people who loved Harry Potter and want to read something different, there are many good options for adults and young readers. Here are five great books to read for Harry Potter fans.
5) Percy Jackson & the Olympics by Rick Riordan
It’s amazing how close Harry Potter and Percy Jackson are to each other. Both are books about a young boy who doesn’t know about magic until he ends up getting kicked out of school/camp, and then they have to save the world from evil creatures. Then they made friends with two other young people who helped them in their work, and then they realized that their fate is the Chosen which means that they probably had to face their death to save the day.
The good news is that there are enough differences to make Percy Jackson stand out as a unique experience. Instead of the magical world of wizards, this is the world of the Green Gods, with Percy and his companions as demigods who must stand up and protect the world from the Titans who want to destroy it and the many Greek Hods who care about nothing but themselves. There were five books in the main Percy Jackson series, as well as a sequel trilogy and three sequels.
4) A Deadly Lesson by Naomi Novik

For Harry Potter fans looking for something more adult-focused, Naomi Novik’s A Deadly Lesson may be the right choice. This is a fantasy series that follows Galadriel “El” Higgins, a half-Welsh, half-Indian witch. He is enrolled in a school of magic based on Scholmance (a fictional Romanian school of magic supposedly run by the Devil).
El must make it to school while trying to learn how to control his destructive abilities. There were three books in the series, with the latest book having the same title Last in School and The Golden Enclaves. This is very similar to Hogwarts in the world of Harry Potter, but it takes the limitations of a wizard school and takes things a little more seriously. Half of all students die before they graduate, so this puts a lot of pressure on El to survive.
3) The Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

For fans of the magical parts of Harry Potter, The Discovery of Witches is a great book by Deborah Harkness. This is not about the children of a school of learning magic, but about a real professor named Diana who accepts her lineage as a witch and wants to find a manuscript that has been lost for a long time. This leads her to meet a charming vampire named Matthew, and the two begin a forbidden love story.
It’s easy to see the similarities between this and some of the more unusual romances, such as During the daybut this is based mostly on historical fantasy and not a young adult story. It is also more intelligently written During the day series, with a fantastic fairy tale and the story of Diana and Matthew fighting to stop the darkness from entering the real world. There were three books in this series, and it was changed to a The Discovery of Witches television series.
2) Mrs. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

For fans looking for a modern fantasy book about children with special powers similar to Harry Potter, Ransom Riggs’ book. Mrs. Peregrine’s Home for Exceptional Children fits that perfectly. This is a book aimed at a young audience, just like the first Harry Potter books were, and it’s more whimsical and whimsical than anything else about the Boy Boy.
The book is also uniquely designed, with a mix of narrative and local dialects and photographs to help tie the story together. The story is about a boy who follows clues from his grandfather’s photos and stories to send him on a journey to an abandoned orphanage on a Welsh island, where he discovers a fascinating story. There were five reviews of the book, and no less than Tim Burton ordered a major adaptation of the story by Eva Green and Asa Butterfield.
1) Magic by Lev Grossman

Magicians is the first part of a trilogy of books by Lev Grossman. It is similar to the Harry Potter books in that it involves young wizards who are admitted to the school, but instead of the young teenagers going to Hogwarts, this involves a group of magicians who are admitted to a college for magic, where they learn to sharpen their skills and navigate their teenage years.
That makes it like Harry Potter, but for the college crowd. The best thing is that this tells a self-contained story that wraps up well in just three books, and when read in reverse, it gives an almost complete story. This is also the most successful of these books to get a TV adaptation, as The Magicians premiered on Syfy in 2016 and ran for five seasons.
