The daughter of famous wildlife educator and TV host Steve Irwin is opening up about her biggest fight yet.
Bindi Irwin, who followed him Crocodile Hunter father’s steps to becoming a conservationist and “wildlife warrior,” has been battling a chronic illness for more than a decade.
On Monday, Bindi, 27, posted pictures of herself in a hospital bed on Instagram.
In the caption, she explained, “In the past three years, I have had more than 50 endometriosis lesions removed from my body.”

Endometriosis is a condition in which cysts of tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grow in places where they shouldn’t, such as in the fallopian tubes or ovaries. It can cause severe pain and menstrual problems and can affect fertility.

“The chocolate cyst that was attached to my side ovary was removed,” she continued. “Appendectomy and hernia repair.”
Chocolate cyst, or ovarian endometrioma, is a lesion attached to the ovary and filled with old menstrual blood. It is more common in cases of severe endometriosis.
Reflecting on her experience, Bindi continued, “I felt indescribable, inescapable pain,” and said she tried to keep her illness to herself because doctors dismissed her pain as “part of being a woman.”

She revealed that she went undiagnosed for ten years before getting answers – a common experience among endometriosis patients, who wait seven to 10 years on average for their diagnosis.
She says: “When I was a teenager and a young woman, I felt weak and very insecure.

“It’s up to all of us to raise awareness, not just for endometriosis but for women’s health in general. No one deserves to suffer in silence,” she wrote, tagging endometriosis surgeon Dr. Tamer Seckin and the Endometriosis Foundation of America as sources of additional information.
He wrote: “If you are in pain, my heart goes out to you, and added, “I believe you, please find answers, and don’t give up, I know how hard that can be.”

Comments on the post quickly flooded in with people thanking Bindi for sharing her journey and shedding light on endometriosis—a condition that affects an estimated 10% of women of childbearing age, though many are unaware of it.
Her mother, Terri Irwin, also commented on Bindi’s post.
“I’m so proud of you for sharing your journey, Bindi,” Terri wrote, and added, “I’ve learned that it’s important for women to seek out a doctor who does surgery rather than blood.

Excision surgery is a minimally invasive surgery where the lesions are removed through laparoscopy or laparotomy.
On the other hand, endometrial ablation is a non-surgical procedure in which the lining of the uterus is destroyed using methods such as extreme cold and microwave energy, according to the Mayo Clinic.
In March 2023, Bindi began to share her diagnosis on social media, writing that for the past 10 years she had struggled with “unrelenting fatigue, pain and nausea” while visiting doctors and undergoing many tests and tests, all without answers.

At the time, Bindi opted for surgery after finally getting tested and learning she had 37 cysts.
He thanked his doctors, nurses and everyone who took his pain seriously.
“I’m on the road to recovery,” wrote the mother of one, and added, “Please be gentle and quiet before you ask me (or any woman) when we’re going to have more children.”
