AARON TURNER & STEVE VON TILL Discuss Reinventing NEUROSIS – Metal Injection

The unexpected return of Neurosis this year has come as a big surprise for all those involved in heavy music.

For a while, it seemed that the group had reached an unexpected and clear end after the 2022 controversy about the former singer/songwriter. Scott Kellywho publicly admitted that he abused his wife and children. When he responded, his colleagues quickly condemned his actions, removed him from the team and effectively placed him on probation. Neurosis indefinitely.

That silence ended on March 20 when Neurosis resurfaced without warning, releasing a new studio album, Eternal Love For A Burning World. Next to the drop came to reveal that Aaron Turner – known for his work and SUMAC, The Dark Old Man and Isis – he had come in to fill Kelly‘s part.

On paper, Turner‘s addition provides a closer understanding. Throughout the 2000s, the sonic fusion between Neurosis and Isis was called so tongue-in-cheekNeur-Isis” became shorthand for the entire genre of modern metal.

In a new interview with Group campguitarist/vocalist Steve Von Till and Turner it opened with the renewal of the group and how the group came together. Thinking about the decision, Von Till “We were thinking about how we could reinvent ourselves with the same energy that we reinvented ourselves with when I first got involved, when we left,” he explained. Word As Law [1990] to Spirits at Zero [1992].

“But we are not young men anymore. What kind of puzzles can we put in front of us to create that level of restoration when time does not go the same way as before? It came down to finding the right energy.

“To be honest, it’s just hesitation Aaron at first it seemed so obvious. And we couldn’t believe that he wasn’t so busy with his job that he would want to drop everything and join our dysfunctional senior team. ”

Turnermeanwhile, he described his reaction to the invitation as natural and surreal, due to his long association with the group: “It’s not like Steve and I had not spoken, and suddenly he asked me to join. Our paths intertwined long ago.

“A lot of my projects have freed things up [Neurosis‘s label] Neurot. I did the artwork for Neurosis. Neurosis you took my old band [ISIS] on a trip. I don’t know if Steve remember this, but in the early 2000s, he suggested that I come to the Bay Area and do some stuff with him and one of the guys that came out. Tools.

“This is a social relationship where everyone is always doing things together, and there are always ideas flowing back and forth. In that way, it wasn’t surprising to me. I had an open conversation with Steve for many years. At the same time, it was a really important moment for me because this is a band that I was influenced by in many ways, musically and emotionally.”

Importantly, the team didn’t just want someone else. Like Von Till puts it: “We have always been a team, and we need power. As far as people can think that they understand what goes on behind the scenes in certain teams, Neurosis it has always been a partnership. This board, since it was a renewal, we didn’t want the same old stuff.

“We wanted someone to come with a new idea and a new approach—to do not just the old stuff, but to bring in the new stuff.Neur-IsisJokes aside, what really happened Aaron done with SUMACa really unwavering sonic energy and command of raw emotion, and his unique style of guitar playing, which we felt would click with our energy.”
