Everyone From ‘Lord of the Rings’ Can Be Expected in Stephen Colbert’s Sequel Movie (Including Another Surprise)

The internet and social media were recently ablaze with the announcement for a long time Late Show host Stephen Colbert is writing a new movie on King of Wings franchise along with former writer Philippa Boyens and her son Peter McGee. With a title The Lord of the Rings: A Shadow of the PastThe sequel will cover six chapters that have never been adapted from JRR Tolkien’s. The Fellowship of the Ring – Chapters III to VIII – as it takes place after Frodo Baggins leaves for the Endless Lands. (Note: Chapter two in The Fellowship of the Ring is titled, “The Shadow of the Past.”) Here is a summary of Warner Bros. Pictures:

The Lord of the Rings: A Shadow of the Past set 14 years after Frodo’s death. Sam, Merry, and Pippin began to retrace the first steps of their journey. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-hidden secret and is determined to reveal why the War of the Ring was almost lost before it began.”

Since the Third Age officially ended with Frodo’s departure in TA 3021 (after the War of the Ring and the Invasion of the Shire), 14 years after this event would place Middle-earth in the Fourth Age, around SR 1435. which will make their silver screen debut). Let’s dive into every character we can expect from Stephen Colbert Lord of the Courts the next movie.

For example “Sam” Gamgee

Samwise Gamgee
New Line Cinema

In SR 1435, or Fourth Years 14, Sam and his wife, Rose Cotton, welcome their ninth child and fifth daughter, Primrose Gardner, into the world (and have four more children after Primrose). At this point in the series, Sam would be Shire Mayor (or Michel Delving’s mayor), as he was elected to seat SR 1427 after Will Whitfoot resigned. Sam also has the Red Book of Westmarch, which Frodo passed on to him before sailing to Valinor with Bilbo Baggins and the other Ring bearers. He, Merry, and Pippin eventually became Counselors of the Northern kingdom in SR 1434 (Fourth Age 13) courtesy of King Elessar (Aragorn), and would hold these positions for nearly 50 years until Sam sailed West.

Elanor Gamgee, also known as Elanor the Fair

Elanor Gamgee and Sam Gamgee Warner Bros. Pictures/New Line Cinema

Based on the synopsis mentioned above, it seems safe to assume that Elanor Gamgee, also known as Elanor the Fair, will be the main antagonist. The Lord of the Rings: A Shadow of the Past. Perhaps the audience can expect to see Elanor leading the present day events of the film between the “forgotten” chapters. The Fellowship of the Ring. Sam and Rose’s first child, Elanor was born in TA 3021, the same year Frodo leaves for the Unfound Lands. She was apparently the only child of Sam that Frodo knew, and he suggested that she name him. So, in Four Years 14, Elanor is 14 years old.

Although little is known about what she does in SR 1435, the following year, Elanor chats with Sam about the War of the Ring before Lord Elessar rides to the Brandywine Bridge to meet Sam, Merry, and Pippin. That same year, Elanor also serves as maid of honor to Queen Arwen. Elanor eventually spends time in Gondor with her family before marrying Fastred of Greenholm in SR 1451, at the age of 30. Her husband becomes Warden of Westmarch. After Rose dies in SR 1482, Sam travels to the Endless Realms, but not before giving Elanor the Red Book. He is the last person to see Sam.

Elanor is the guardian of Middle-earth’s history, and her clan continues to keep the Red Book in their possession. There is great responsibility in this, to be sure. The setting of the film shows us that Elanor is already interested in historical events.

Meriadoc “Merry” Brandybuck

Merry played an important role in the Battle of the Saint and the Clearing of the Shire in the Third Age (helping Éowyn with the assassination of the Witch-king of Angmar is a big deal). Because of his bravery, he was honored by the new King of Rohan. Some time after the end of the Third Age, Merry tied the knot with Estella Bolger (sister of his friend, Fredegar) and became Lord of Buckland in SR 1432. He went on to write a few scholarly papers such as Old Shire Words and Namesa comment about the relationship between the language of the Rohirrim and the hobbits of the Shire (we love the short king with many talents). He has at least one son, but his name is unknown.

Peregrin “Pippin” took

Pippin took it Warner Bros. Pictures/New Line Cinema

After the Battle of Bywater (The Scouring of the Shire), Pippin and Merry were hailed as heroes. Pippin was a Knight of Gondor and Warden of the Citadel during the War of the Ring, too. In SR 1427 (Fourth Age 6), Pippin married Diamond of Long Cleeve, and they adopted their son, Faramir Took, in SR 1430. Then, in SR 1434, Pippin inherited the Thainship from his late father to become the 32nd Thain of the Shire. In fact, Pippin is a librarian, collecting historical information on the Great Smials, his family’s ancestral home.

Tom Bombadil

Tom Bombadil (played by Rory Kinnear) to "The Rings of Power" Season 2. Great video

If old Tom Bombadil isn’t a happy man or wearing a bright blue jacket with yellow boots, I’m going to riot. Finally, Middle-Earth’s most mysterious character makes his big screen debut The Lord of the Rings: A Shadow of the Past. Bombadil is a key game in those six chapters that Peter Jackson never got used to The Fellowship of the Ring. At the beginning of the Fellowship’s main journey, they meet Tom Bombadil in the Old Forest. Chapter VII is even called, “Tom Bombadil’s House.” We will no doubt see him for a long time and possibly now, as Bombadil is an organization that existed before the arrival of Melkor. (The One Ring has no effect on ole Tom, either.) Bombadil helps rescue Merry and Pippin from Old Man Willow and allows the hobbits to live in his modest home with his wife, Goldberry. And deliver them from the Barrow-wights of the Barrow-downs.

Finally, Gandalf has a long talk with Bombadil before going to Valinor. Nothing is known of Bombadil’s activities in the Fourth Century. However, since he is a ghost, there is a chance that he is still the Master of the Old Forest, snarling ideas and dropping sick rhymes.

Goldberry, Also known as River-daughter

Goldberry, also called River-daughter, is, as we know, the wife of Tom Bombadil. Like her husband, she is thought to be the spirit of the river Withywindle. She is also the daughter of the River-woman, so this makes sense. She is said to be “a young Maia associated with the element of water.” He meets the hobbits inside The Fellowship of the Ringand, like Bombadil, they find him perfect—yet hospitable and beautiful—amazing. And Bombadil proven for Shadows of the Pastit would be foolish not to include Goldberry in the list.

Gildor Inglorion

Gildor Inglorion in The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game (c) Fantasy Aircraft Games-Middle Earth Enterprises

Gildor Inglorion is introduced in Chapter III of The Fellowship of the Ring“Third Company.” Ñldor Elf of House Finrod, Gildor and his band meet Frodo after passing through the Shire. Gildor invites the hobbits to stay with his party. He is the first High Elf that Frodo crossed paths with. Gildor advises Frodo and the Fellowship on their perilous journey ahead, encouraging the hobbit to surround himself with trusted friends. In the book, Gildor confirms that Aragorn and Tom Bombadil know about the Fellowship’s mission. Even Glorfindel (who was also left out of Jackson’s trilogy) rides from Rivendell to help when Aragorn and the hobbits are being chased by the Nazgûl.

Even though it’s assumed that Gildor and his crew went to the Endless Lands alongside the Strangers of the Ring, that doesn’t mean we won’t meet him in a flashback sequence or two. Elijah Wood could also come back in that position (fingers crossed).

Aragorn II, King of Gondor

Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn is still from one of the "King of Wings" movies. New Line Cinema

All hail Elessar of the House of Telcontar, King of Arnor and Gondor, also known as Aragorn II. His reign brings an era of peace and prosperity. He restores the Shire and the kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor. Aragorn is not done with the hobbits, either, meeting again with Sam, Merry, and Pippin at the Brandywine Bridge in SR 1436. As we know, he gives new roles to our three hobbits. He eventually goes on to have a son, Eldarion, and two unnamed daughters with his wife, Queen Arwen of the United Kingdom, sometime in the Fourth Age, so we meet them as children in the film. It will be nice to see Aragorn in his place as king.

Arwen, Queen of the United Kingdom again

Arwen holds a sword in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Arwen holds a sword in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
New Line Cinema

Arwen Evenstar leaves her place on the ship to Valinor with the Ring bearers at the end of the King of Wings: The return of the kinggave up her immortality to marry Aragorn. Alongside her husband, the Queen of the United Kingdom works hard to maintain harmony in Middle-earth and remains close to the allies of Gondor in the Fourth Age. In SR 1436, he takes Elanor as his maid of honor, so we should expect pictures of the two of them. Since Elanor and her family spend time in Gondor for a year, it would not be easy to imagine that she will meet the king again, Beren to Lúthien of Arwen.
