Lionel Richie issues warning to rude celebrities after Chappell Roan’s behavior

Lionel Richie knows the fame game can be challenging, and he issued a warning to rising celebrities after Chappell Roan faced backlash after meeting his fans.

During a sit-down with his son-in-law, Joel Madden, the Good Charlotte expert admitted that he has never heard his father-in-law complain about fans approaching him in public.

“I was invisible once,” Richie explained, before admitting that he had trouble ignoring fans. “They want to say something to you. And you can see it in their face. They want to say something. And for me to ignore them, that would be the worst thing.”

He added, “Sometimes you meet someone you idolize so much, and you’re sorry you ever met them.

The “All Night Long” singer said, “I made a promise to myself – I won’t. Never.”

Richie realized that stardom is not for everyone.

“The thing that usually happens is, I tell people when they get into the business, there’s one thing you haven’t read,” he said. “I hope you love people.

“Because if you don’t like people, this is what it’s going to sound like. You spend the first half of your career saying, ‘Look at me, look at me, look at me, look at me, look at me.’ Then you finally become famous. ‘Don’t look at me. Don’t look at me. Don’t look at me.’

He added, “The universe has given you what you asked for. So what about people you don’t like, or you want to be famous and rich without people? It doesn’t work like that. You have to be able to engage.”

Chappell, 28, spoke about the incident on Instagram stories and later refused to meet a fan after the “very offensive” situation caught the eye of Rio de Janeiro mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.

In a statement shared with X, Cavaliere said that Chappell is no longer welcome do in his city.

“I didn’t ask security to come up and talk to this mother and child. They didn’t come to me. They weren’t doing anything.”

He added, “I don’t hate people who like my music. I don’t hate kids. Like, that’s crazy.”

“I’m sorry for the mother and the child that someone was taking something, that you were going to do something and that if you feel uncomfortable, that hurts me a lot. You didn’t deserve that.”

Jorginho, a midfielder for Campeonato Brasileiro Série A club Flamengo, wrote on Instagram that his family had a “very confusing situation” involving Chappell ahead of Lollapalooza in Brazil.

She said online that her 11-year-old daughter was reprimanded by Chappell’s security for looking at the singer.

He wrote: “The worst thing is that he didn’t approach her. “He passed the singer’s table, looked to make sure it was her, smiled, and went back to sit with his mother. He didn’t say anything, he didn’t ask for anything.”

Jorghino wrote that after his daughter passed, “The senior guard came to their table while they were having breakfast and started speaking aggressively to my wife and daughter, saying that he should not allow my daughter to ‘disrespect’ or ‘harass’ other people.”

He added, “It’s heartbreaking to see this kind of treatment coming from those who should understand the importance of fans. At the end of the day, they’re the ones building all of this. I sincerely hope this serves as a moment of reflection. No one should have to go through this, especially not a child.”
