We’ve recently been reminded that when we announce our Tracks Of The Week winners, we neglect to do them in reverse order, a time-honored way of creating unnecessary tension at such events. So here goes.
In the third place … Crown Lands, by Through The Looking Glass.
In the second place … The Meffs, by Business.
And our winner… is Hollie Rogers, for her most famous single Everything is finewith Elles Bailey and Beth Nielsen-Chapman. So I congratulate him. And indeed, they.
That was fun, wasn’t it?

This week’s contest starts below, and it’s up to you to decide who’s the biggest. Please enjoy listening.

Spell – Take My Life
Blending 80s theater with mouth-smacking power metal guitars, Spell’s latest single is a sweet yet soulful affair shot through with mystique and dry ice. If Ghost were hanging out at biker rallies with Judas Priest, they would have come up with something like this. “Take My Life it’s about the close encounter with death, and the forces at play,” singer/bassist Cam Mesner says: “Where I had to take a decisive action, and fear, but others have given me confidence.”

CJ Wildheart – One of the Boys
All heart-on-sleeve punk’n’roll and glory, One of the Boys billed as a possible track for CJ Wildheart. As such, its good-time bravado and swinging “singalong energy” come in a sweet, sweet way – CJ’s undying love for music growing against the ever-growing challenges of life as an independent artist. Will that be his job to order him? Time will tell. However, for now we I can says his eighth solo album, DEVIL, it will be out in June.

Molly’s Pieces – Don’t Take Me To The Disco (O Call Rock N Roll)
Previous Songs of the Week Winners Pieces of Molly are back with a new one, and it’s rocking hard. “It’s a reaction to the idea that rock’n’roll is dead,” says the passionate New Zealander. “Our response is ‘it’s not dead, it’s just being watered down by the nonsense that most people call rock’n’roll.’ It is not surprising, therefore, that Don’t Take Me To The Disco (You Call It Rock N Roll) it’s a full blast, screaming over the speed limit, driven by a turbocharged riff and an equally loud chorus. Throw in a skinnier video than Judas Priest’s jumble sale and the ladies of Dead End Derby roller derby, and it’s clear that rock’n’roll is very much alive, at least in one corner of Christchurch.

The Moon City Masters – Everyone
Back with a new slice of their upcoming musical cake, The Moon City Masters go full Rush with this powerful bass twiddles, starry-eyed whistle. At times intense, harsh and dreamlike, it’s a controlled new flavor of their work with Kevin Comeau, head of the Crown Lands beard. “In other words, the song shows how people must come together in these dark and uncertain times,” MCM (aka Jordan and Talor Steinberg) said. “The result is a modern song that feels explosive and irresistibly catchy while conveying a message of unity and tolerance.”

Split Dogs – Rock n’ Roll Business
Amping up their punk rock with the delicious Rose Tattoo beer range, Bristol-based rock’n’rollers Split Dogs up their game with the satisfying sound of their first taste of their forthcoming album. Good ‘N’ Rough (coming out in September). Singer Harry Martinez says: “The Rock ‘N’ Roll business is treating the music industry like an old British gangster film. “Dirty acts, selfishness and people you wouldn’t trust with your last ciggie. It’s tongue in cheek but it’s also our big middle finger to everything because it’s true.”

Robert Jon & The Wreck – Run Back to Me
Dreamed up by songwriter Desirae Megan, and live with partner/RJ&TW keyboardist Jake Abernathie), Run to Me is a lovelorn, sweetly bluesy southern rocker with a heart full of old school soul and heartache. A simple ode to loved ones lost on the road, with a sa chorus well it goes where you expect, and it feels good for it. Like what you hear? Find them on their tour across the UK in April.

Bolan feat Danko Jones – At War With Myself
It’s been four decades as a chain-nosed Skid Row performer, songwriter and powerhouse tentpole, but now Rachel Bolan is breaking out into the limelight with her first solo album. Gargoyle from The Garden State. Is it good? Well, the first taste Fight Me offers a promising first impression, all hard, chugging guitars and high-caffeine rock with punk dirt under its claws. Also, guest singer Danko Jones is clearly having a great time singing ‘my life is Marlon Brando, inside the insane-a-go-go’which is so brilliantly dumb as to be intelligent.

Suzi Quatro feat. Alice Cooper – Kick Out The Jams
Where two Detroit legends combine their considerable energies to cover the third track, MC5. It is possible that it will not be surprising that the version of Quatro and Cooper of Kick The Jams it is not as confusing as the first one – and opens “mothers” in a wonderful way! it cries – but it rings true to the age-defying madness of this 153-year-old couple, and there’s a lovely part where they sing the lyrics to each other’s songs. Quatro’s 18th album, Freedomit came out on friday.
