Dune: Part ThreeThe trailer offered a stunning first look at Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy capper, hinting at the big moments and characters set to follow. This includes the main centers on Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), Chani (Zendaya), Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), and Stilgar (Javier Bardem).
But Dune 3 it also includes several new characters. Paul and Chani’s children are set to appear in some form. Robert Pattinson is on board as the villain Scytale. Jason Momoa is back, this time playing Hayt, essentially a reborn and reformed Duncan Idaho, with Anya Taylor-Joy stepping into the shoes of Alia Atreides behind him. Dune: Part Two cameo.
To see all of them Dune 3 The trailer was important, but there is another important character in the novel that Villenueve is adapting, Dune Messiahwhose presence in the film remains a mystery.
Edric is not confirmed for Dune 3, but is necessary for the story
One of the greatest players Dune Messiah it’s a fishy-looking alien named Edric. He is the Spacing Guild Navigator that Herbert’s book describes him as “a tall, vaguely humanoid figure with webbed feet and large membranous arms.” Edric is kept locked in a container full of orange gas, which he needs to survive.
The alien with the fish is at the center of the plot Messiahsince he is one of the main people plotting against Paul’s rule as emperor. Edric is also a known person, which means that Paul cannot see his actions (and vice versa). This makes her a natural shield against Maud’Dib’s visions, allowing Irulan, Scytale, and others to plan freely.
Edric’s large role in the novel has always made his introduction a question hanging over Villeneuve’s. Dune movies. He’ll be the weirdest character the franchise has produced (Future Year II aside), as these movies haven’t strayed too far from the characters or what could possibly be full CGI.
But you Dune 3 doesn’t confirm Edric’s appearance at all this time (no voice actor or body builder is known), the uncertainty of his presence in the film remains. It is an important part of Messiah story, so even if Villeneuve also includes elements of Children of Dune with this third film, removing Edric would force major changes and risk upsetting fans.
And if you ever watched Dune 3 trailer, the humanoid fish alien is nowhere to be seen. Rather than taking this as a sign that Villeneuve cut Edric out of the story, there’s a good chance the film cleverly kept him out of the picture to save his appearance and role until closer to release, if not until audiences watch the film for the first time.
The trailer for Dune 3 contains many possible glimpses of Edric
A closer look at Dune 3 The trailer that Edric recalled makes the few moments as prominent as possible regarding his involvement. The one that has gotten the most attention is the image above, where a long, floating vessel follows Scytale into the room. Whoever is inside is not visible, only that there is an orange / red color where a person’s face could be.
This may be a portable version of Edric’s tank, with a humanoid fish inside. Edric and Scytale meet repeatedly in the book as they plot against Paul, so this could be when they arrive at one of their secret meetings. However, there is also a feeling that this thing has Hayt, and Scytale is preparing to give Paul the ghoul.
If this is Hayt and not Edric, I’ll offer a shot from later in the trailer as a possible glimpse of the mysterious character. Unknown figures are shown escorting a large container to the Keep while Alia sits on a throne. If Villeneuve went for Edric and his tank, maybe a minute below is him.
Perhaps none of them are Edric. But if so, then all hope is still not lost. There is a shot of a small spaceship flying towards it that looks like one of the Spacing Guild’s Hieghliners. There’s even another fast ship of a different black ship that stops something. Both of these minutes could be Edric or his fellow advocates arriving at one of their meetings where he would be present.
It is still possible that Dune: Part Three leaves its humanoid fish neighbor, but if Messiah It’s Villeneuve’s favorite book in the series, as he said, and leaving out someone as important as Edric would be surprising.
