Compelling scenery, epic missions, and a likable lead character Ahe Mary project by Andy Weir the horror sci-fi viewer; Adapting to the latest movies is also exciting. It’s hard to match the heights the book can reach, but the film version of Ryan Gosling’s story is still very entertaining without straying too far from its beloved source material.

Ahe Mary project It’s not Weir’s first book to be turned into a movie. The Martianwritten by Weir in 2011, it was adapted into a 2015 sci-fi novel starring Matt Damon in the title role. It tells the story of an astronaut who is stranded on Mars after a dangerous mission where he is presumed dead. He struggles to survive in a soulless place while trying to find his way home in what is a fast-paced, gripping read.
The Martian explores similar themes to Ahe Mary project is another hard sci-fi story that cleverly combines dramatic elements with human appeal. You also spend a lot of time with the main character, who is isolated and far from home, and Weir makes the science fiction elements accessible while keeping the emotions alive. Like a movie, The Martian it does not provide the same sound or energy as the film version Ahe Mary projectbut both books are worth reading.
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
A local opera with an amazing cast
For those looking for a fast-paced, charming play about someone who feels sad in the head, this funny and fun space opera is worth checking out. The story follows a character named Rosemary who gets a job as part of the crew aboard the Wayfarer. Chambers brings together an imaginative and diverse group of otherworldly creatures, weaving timely themes of acceptance and identity into a story about finding yourself and your people.
As the title suggests, this story is light and heartwarming, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t moments of fear and heartache. It’s a fun lark with hard sci-fi elements while relying on a lot of drama and human relationships. It’s also the first in the series, so if you’re enjoying your time with these characters, there’s plenty more to come!
The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin
A classic story told across time and space
The first novel in the Remembrance of the World Trilogy is an inspiring and complex novel about culture, history and identity. And foreigners. A military signal sent into space is received by hostile life forms threatening Earth, prompting teams from around the world to respond. However, this story is not as straightforward as it may seem.
Told loosely, The Three-Body Problem deals with the past, present, and future, and readers jump between times and characters as the story unfolds. The book has won many awards, and the first Chinese edition and the English language translation have won many awards; it was also adapted into an ambitious Netflix series. However, you should read the book first.
Piranesi was written by Susanna Clarke
A strange exploration of a strange, haunting place
This story is definitely a bit different from the others on the list, but like Project Hail Mary, there are plenty of mysteries to unravel as you follow the main character’s somewhat singular, seemingly impossible mission. Although it’s more fantasy fiction than hard sci-fi, it’s definitely worth a read; This story will test the limits of your imagination as it takes you to a new and amazing world.
Piranesi lives in a house like no other. Home is limitless and never the same, and there is only one person there, a strange person in their journey. This creative novel is haunting and incredibly timely, offering a sense of trauma, isolation, and identity in a story that is difficult to write.
Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang
An intimate story of language and thought
This collection of short stories features exciting sci-fi and fantasy stories that showcase Chiang’s talent as an imaginative storyteller. While all the stories are worth reading, one stands out above the rest as an excellent example of world building and character; and there are foreigners.
The Story of Your Life is a 1998 novel that follows a linguist recruited by the military to communicate with alien life forms that have arrived on Earth. There are aliens, but it’s not really about aliens. The story is told from the POV of Dr. Louise Banks messages written to her daughter, and follows an unusual path that moves between the past and the future. It’s a complex story worth reading at one time, and perhaps again after, that perfectly marries both technical, hard sci-fi with strong human emotion. Although the film adaptation, Arrival, was ambitious and appealing, this book is stellar and a must read for any sci-fi fan.
