New Rush frontman Anika Nilles, who performed with the band for the first time at Canada’s annual Juno Awards at the TD Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario, over the weekend, talked about her first rehearsals with Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, and about the man she succeeded in, the late Neil Peart.
“I had prepared a few songs before the flight, and we played them,” he says in an interview with the new issue of. Classic Rock. “But during the meeting, we also talked a lot about Neil – about his thoughts on the music and the drums. We talked a lot about the ideas of the songs. The most important thing is to capture the emotions – that it feels right for the two of them to play their music again.
“And in the end, it will feel right for the fans. We talked about that a lot. The first meeting was really about getting to know each other and seeing how we work together.”
In the second interview in the new edition of Classic RockLee and Lifeson tell their side of the story, and reveal the first song they played together.
“We had planned five songs, but I think it might be Shine,“Said Lee. “We wouldn’t have wanted something like this YYZ as the first song, although we finished it at those meetings. We played [Spirit Of] Radio and Anika again. I don’t remember what we played anymore. We did that Separationso it may have been so.”
“And that’s a song that seems easy to us,” says Lifeson. “That’s been amazing to watch. So you get an appreciation for the way the song is, but you also get a stronger appreciation for how Neil plays. Because when you see someone trying to capture his emotions, you realize what kind of player he was, and the intensity of his emotions, the intensity of the attack as well.
“Yes Tom Sawyeror even Shineyou can’t just blast those songs, you have to pay attention. And, you know, stand up straight. And that’s kind of where the ideas come from. “
The first dates of Rush’s Frifty Something tour are the quartet’s shows at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, CA, this June, the site of the group’s last show with Neil Peart in 2015.
