What was it about this book that made you want to add Bad Wolf to the Jane Austen universe adaptation?
I often look at our Bad Wolf board and think, Yes, how did it happen that happen? When Janice Hadlow started talking to me about Another Bennet Sistershe hadn’t written the book yet, but she has a real ear for Jane Austen and is an expert on Georgians. We’re both fans of 19th century literature, and he knew I’d done a lot of editing before my time with Bad Wolf. I knew that if someone else would take a different approach to Austen, Janice would be able to do it with love and respect for everything that Jane Austen dealt with, saw, and stood for, but she would find her own way.
The second thing was Mary Bennet herself. Most of us aspire to be Elizabeth Bennet but believe that we are actually Mary Bennet. There was a modern lens through which we could look at the Bennet family: through the lens of a character that Jane Austen felt she was not allowed to look at because she was an unmarried daughter. Mary was the one who tried hard to practice the piano but she kept hitting the piano, which was very serious. Jane Austen didn’t like him, she didn’t make fun of him. Most of the people he doesn’t like he at least finds it fun to embarrass and kill them on the page. But not Mary Bennet.
I talk freely about the length of time we produce things at Bad Wolf, because everything likes to be there. We don’t produce a lot of series, and when we do, we really care about it. When Janice first talked about this, it was in 2016 or 2017, and the world was probably not ready for this Maria. We had to wait until the world was ready for a heroine who wasn’t the type of person we all look up to, as opposed to the type of person who reflects who we think we are. Above all else, this is a story of kindness and inclusion, which everyone craves.
Your generalization reminds me of something I really liked about Ella Bruccoleri’s performance. She includes a lot of moments that made me wonder if the audience was being invited to interpret Mary as neurodivergent. Growing up in a family of five girls, she would have been taught things like manners and tone of voice, but she misses out on many social cues. Are those qualities there on purpose, or is it a “if you know, you know” situation?
If you know, you know. Janice wrote Mary Bennet in a formal way, and of course you can translate those things, but we never had that conversation. It is not intentionally classified, but I hope it will bring a lot of people a lot of joy to watch it.
Yes, I think television viewers are hungry for depictions of neurodivergence, especially for a female character. Males are often easier to spot, and some gender balance is welcome.
It’s usually very easy to see male characters, but it’s like that big arrow pointing. The thing about Mary is that this is what Mary is. I’m a 24-year-old mother of twins, and being able to recognize those traits is inspiring.
Now that Mary is the main character, it seems that Mary is recovering from a childhood that was close to emotional abuse.
Mary Bennet is not loved by Mrs. Bennet and Mr. Bennet, so she feels unloved, and whatever love her sisters give her, she doesn’t recognize it. The path he takes everywhere Another Bennet Sister it is a journey where he learns to love himself. This is not dependent on the man who loves her but on Mary Bennet finding out that she deserves to love herself, so after feeling for a long time that she has no place in the natural order of things, she learns it does to have a place in the world.
If you can imagine being the middle sister of the Bennet sisters, the other four are all great role models. They will jump, jump, jump like iron. They have a good attitude. They have clear skin. They are thin. They are tall, know how to make small talk and enjoy it. It’s kind of a nightmare to be surrounded by girls like that, without you they one of those girls.

These were big, well-known practices that I would have done just because Pride and Prejudice all those years before he kicked the door and said, These great books that some people may be afraid to read, let’s look at them in the form of serialized television.
