‘I doubt it.’ Why Craig Melvin is (allegedly) unhappy with Savannah Guthrie’s comments on Today’s Interview

Savannah Guthrie recently opened up about the search for her mother, Nancy, during a multi-part interview released last week. The Today the co-host was interviewed by longtime colleague and friend Hoda Kotb, during which Guthrie became emotional. Since the interview’s release, much has been said about the insight Guthrie provided about his current feelings as well as his plans to return to his work in the near future. All the while, the insider is talking about a colleague, Craig Melvin, who is said to be unhappy.

If this source is to be believed, Craig Melvin takes issue with Savannah Guthrie’s interview for one reason. An unnamed source who shared the claim with the Daily Mail suggests that Melvin is reportedly upset at not being chosen to speak with Guthrie for the role. The source said he went on to share details about the reason behind Melvin’s comments:

Craig is very sad that he didn’t get that interview. He thought it was his time with Savannah – and it didn’t go his way. He wasn’t just passed over – he wasn’t even asked. That’s the real sting. Craig believed he had found the place. He is the official host. So being left out completely feels like a huge setback. There is a real sense of confusion. He doesn’t understand why he wasn’t given a chance. Hoda left the chair. It’s not fair.

Kotb served as assistant to Today near Guthrie and was named to the position in 2018. It was in the fall of 2024 that Kotb announced that he would step down from his job to pursue other careers and spend more time with his children. Kotb’s last day on the job was January 10, 2025, and Melvin was eventually chosen to replace him as co-host. Recently, however, Kotb returned to the studio to fill in for Guthrie during his time off.

No officials from the morning show or NBC News have explained how Guthrie’s conversation was chosen. The insider also dismissed other complaints about Melvin’s thinking:
