Matthew McConaughey’s Netflix Animated Game Is A Modern Prize Worth Retelling – SlashFilm

Travis Knight’s 2016 film “Kubo and the Two Strings” is a visually stunning and dramatic story. It also immediately caused controversy upon its release, as the film featured Japanese actors, but had white actors from the United States, England and South Africa. The lead character, Kubo, is portrayed by Art Parkinson, a white Irish actor. Other passengers were Charlize Theron, Ralph Fiennes, Rooney Mara, Brenda Vaccaro and Matthew McConaughey. The only Japanese or Japanese-American actors on stage were George Takei and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and they had small supporting roles.

One can also criticize that “Kubo” means that it is a story of Japanese people, but it was entirely the creator of the film Marc Haimes and Chris Butler. The production, at least, took its cues from various Japanese artists and art forms. Origami and shamisen music are used extensively, while the film’s visuals are taken from woodblock prints, particularly art by Hokusai, Hiroshige, and Koichi Sato. Travis Knight talked about all the Japanese art he learned in a 2016 interview with Wired. He liked the idea of his stop-motion animation studio, Laika, making a samurai epic, a style he liked, and was referred to him by a colleague.

“Kubo” was seen everywhere, but it did not take the world by storm like Laika’s previous films “Coraline” and “ParaNorman.” The former made around $186 million at the box office, while the latter made over $107 million. “Kubo” earned only 77.5 million dollars on its budget of 60 million dollars, which is a loss, according to Hollywood accounting rules.

However, the film’s brilliance was recognized by many; “Kubo” was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards. It’s currently on Netflix and well worth getting.

Kubo and Two Strings still look good

Although cultural indifference is present in “Kubo and Two Strings,” visually, it is still very beautiful. As with all Laika products, the texture is blocky and tactile, with sharp edges and hard surfaces covering every person and every wall. Laika also famously uses 3D printing to build its maquettes, which allows the stop-motion process to be speeded up and simplified. 3D printing also allowed the characters to have more different facial expressions, as the animators were not limited to the faces they had already built.

The story is properly folkloric. Kubo lives in a proud Japanese village where he plays his two-stringed shamisen to tell stories in the town square. Kubo has the power of mind, as his music allowed origami to come to life and make his songs. His mother (Theron) is losing her mind, and warns Kubo that his grandfather, the moon god, may return one day and take out his right eye; Kubo lost his left eye when he was a baby. One night, Kubo’s twin aunts (Mara) attack him. After an accident that takes his mother’s life, Kubo finds himself on the lam, looking for mysterious weapons and armor on his mother’s orders.

Kubo is joined in his quest by a mysterious talking macaque (again Theron), and eventually gets a half-beetle fighter (McConaughey) to join him. During their mission, there is a unique sequence with giant skeletons, and an encounter with a sea monster. The animation is very good. In fact, there will be more plot developments and revelations, especially about the true nature of the talking macaque and beetle fighter. “Kubo” is part of a fairy tale, but like the “Wizard of Oz.”

Laika has struggled over the years

A recent clip that played “Kubo and Two Strings” revealed that the skeleton was a huge creation, which no doubt made it very difficult to survive.

Critics loved “Kubo,” and it received a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 229 reviews. Many were impressed by its visuals and its unique sense of melancholy; it’s a beautiful story, yes, but one filled with death and mourning. Justin Chang, writing for the Los Angeles Times, said that the film had a dreamlike quality, which made him forget that the characters were all stop-motion animation. /The movie loved the film’s tone of sadness.

Travis Knight, son of Nike CEO Phil Knight, was really impressed with the film’s performance in the Complex article linked above. His response was a little weak. He expressed that he was concerned about good actors playing the roles and that Matthew McConaughey was a great actor. He pointed out that it was a Japanese story, even if it wasn’t portrayed by Japanese actors. 2016 was when many cartoon shows and movies began to acknowledge that, for all the racial and cultural diversity on screen, the recording booths were still full of white actors. In 2017, filmmaker Hari Kondabolu released the film “The Problem with Apu,” about an Indian character in “The Simpsons” portrayed by white actor Hank Azaria.

Laika suffered a major disaster in 2019 with the release of their comedy “Missing Link”, which earned only $26.6 million against its $100 million budget. The studio’s next film, “Wildwood,” also directed by Knight, will hit theaters in October 2026.
