If you choose to ride with Paladin PowersThe first rule of thumb is to stop showing off at home. Like most Europower, Beyond the Reach of Magic it requires a love (or at least a tolerance) of whimsical nonsense and imaginative play. Expect big verses, bigger singers, and lots of guitar shredding. Although the first one was more dedicated to the smoothness of the Military Power or Rhapsody of Fire, Paladin Powers now they split their loyalties equally between heavy metal and hard rock Helloween fashion. This is happening Beyond the Reach of Magic a brawnier sound, aided again by a meaty bass sound that adds a welcome tone to this bright charcuterie board. These Paladinsometimes they give in to their dark desires, brought to light by the death of Óskar Rúnarsson (“Glade Lords of Athel Loren,” “Valediction”), which makes them endearing and animated.
Beyond the Reach of Magic it may be a little thing, but what is it Paladin Powers aside is their full power and curiosity. Their music challenges one’s ability to remain still; even my hysterical five-year-old daughter couldn’t resist the urge to get a headache the first time she heard the opening words to “Glade Lords of Athel Loren.” No part of the body can remain limp or sad when they hear the strong rhythm of “Sword Vigor” or “The Royal Road” stomping and swinging. Vocalist Atli Guðlaugsson often steals the show, his powerful falsettos unleashing unfiltered eardrums. That said, how impressive Paladin Powers he can write songs in a way that a frontman cannot completely control the listener’s emotions. Einar Karl Júlíusson keeps changing his double bass rhythm, and there are plenty of fast-burning guitar and keyboard parts to keep the pace going.

However, all this energy is still going on Beyond the Reach of Magic it can be a little tiring. The album art may be relaxing around the campfire, but the music is much closer to the battlefield. The respite is fleeting and sometimes doesn’t sound good, like when “The Arcane Tower” suddenly dies down to a whisper in the middle. I find myself missing the natural relaxation of “Creatures of the Night” and “There Can Only Be One” from With the Magic of Windfyre Steel. Not until the 10-minute finale, “Valediction,” there Paladin Powers it takes a proper breather in the form of gentle guitar plucks. The extra time also allows for some creative experiments, with simple keyboard changes during the extended bridge, as well as a short but sweet duet with Sara Rut Fannarsdóttir (more in the future, please!). Everything is tightly scripted and executed, and but it comes together in the end.
If you want to indulge in the sweet side of fun, Paladin Powers will gladly act as your guide. They sound bolder than before and more solid than ever, they also strike a great balance between absurdity and materiality. Beyond the Reach of Magic somehow surpassed the power of its predecessor, powerful and fast songs that hit the unholy with courage. I would like to have a stronger speed, but this may be a “me” problem, and I am not listening from front to back. Gather your party and grab your dice – the next campaign awaits!
