Ram Gopal Varma spoke about the influence of Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar and its sequel Dhurandhar: The Revenge starring Ranveer Singh, drawing strong comparisons with Sandeep Reddy Vanga‘s Animal toy Ranbir Kapoor and explain why the former left a deep impression on him.In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, the filmmaker talked about scale, storytelling, and how Dhurandhar 2 breaks conventional filmmaking conventions.
‘The animal is still in the template’
Explaining the difference between the two films, Varma said, “Look, I’ll tell you the difference… Animal is still another version of The Godfather. Instead of Michael Corleone, you have Ranbir Kapoor. It’s still a father-son story where the father is attacked and the son takes over. It’s in that template. ““Dhurandhar… I don’t believe it is. The closest example I can give is something on the scale of a James Bond movie,” he added.
‘The scale of Dhurandhar is very large’
He also highlighted how scale plays an important role in setting the film apart. “The animal didn’t have that scale. The villains were normal. The horror was in Ranbir Kapoor’s scenes and character. But Dhurandhar’s scale is huge,” he said.
‘You don’t look at the hero Animal, but you do at Hamza’
Talking about the actor, Varma said, “No one will look at Ranbir Kapoor in Animal. You enjoy his performance, you are amazed by what he does.”“But people like Shiva or Michael Corleone—you respect them. The same thing with Hamza,” he added.He pointed out that Dhurandhar’s opponent stands out because of his weak personality. “Usually, Hamza doesn’t express himself. You can imagine how he feels… usually he is just looking, not saying anything,” he said.
‘I couldn’t believe that a superhero took this role’
Varma is also surprised that the superstar chose such an interior. “I couldn’t believe that a great hero could take on such an internalized role,” he said.Drawing a comparison with the earlier era, he added, “From the time of Amitabh Bachchan, even if there was inner anger, there were powerful dialogues that explained everything. Here, there are many intimate relationships where you are left to explain what the hero feels.”
‘You can’t get Aditya Dhar’s mind’
Credit director Aditya Dhar, Varma attributes the film’s impact to his vision.“You can have tons of money, but where are you going to find Aditya? The nuances, the personal details, the emotional meaning—you can’t understand that on paper,” he said.Recalling another incident, he added: “When he burned a photo of his wife and son, I had a lump in my throat.Varma also spoke about how the film portrays courage. “Before, the heroes didn’t show pain because the fans wouldn’t like it. But here, when Hamza is stabbed, I have never seen such true pain in a hero. That fact makes you more connected,” he said.
‘It will ruin everything’
Summarizing his thoughts, Varma said the film will have a lasting impact on the industry.“In one line—here’s the difference: some filmmakers make what they think the audience wants to see.” Aditya Dhar did what he wanted to say, and added, “It will ruin everything.”
