I tried. I certainly did. After disliking 2023 so much Super Mario Bros. MovieI entered its order, Super Mario Galaxy Movie, with hope beyond hope that things will get better. I’m a huge Nintendo fan and have been for almost half a century. This did not have to be perfect. It had to find a balance between an emotional, captivating story to go along with all of Nintendo’s craziness, something that the first movie didn’t do, and many other animated movies. But when Mario and Luigi turned into babies and rode Yoshi and Toad, holding a Super Scope, being chased by a T-Rex on a bone bridge, I realized that nothing had changed. In fact, things could have been worse.
Super Mario Galaxy Movie it is a series of discontinuities with no logical connection or coherence. Oh, there’s a story. But it’s a thin story so the gaps are filled by characters flying, jumping, or falling into new areas where they meet new characters, who also start flying, jumping, or falling. Each frame has little visuals and little Easter eggs. And the veiled attempts to give the film heart are laughable. However, in the end the biggest problem may be that Mario and Luigi become supporting characters in their film, achieving little and learning little.
The story of Super Mario Galaxy Movie that is Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie), the son of Bowser (Jack Black), kidnaps the powerful Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson) in an attempt to find and save her father. Rosalina stars then recruit Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Toad (Keegan Michael Key) to rescue her. But Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) are worried and go after him again, with the help of their new friend Yoshi (Donald Glover) and Bowser, who was captured at the end of the last movie.
Bowser Jr. kidnapping Rosalina is the first sign that the movie hasn’t learned anything from last season. We don’t know any of these people. There is no setup. Of course, Nintendo fans probably know them. And after seeing the last movie, we can easily recognize that somehow it is related to the evil Bowser, and the other looks strangely similar to the hero Peach. But other than that, there is no attempt to attract the audience. So from the first episode, we are given a great deal of action without any spoilers or superficial interest.
From there, we find Mario and Luigi riding dirt bikes across the desert. Is it tasty? Really. Mario even makes his own little “Wahoo” when he jumps. But does it add anything? Not even a little bit. Does it come back and pay off in some interesting way? Not really.
And that’s how the whole movie goes. The characters, locations, and scenes are there for no other reason than to cancel out the movie. For example, take Yoshi. He is truly lovable and wicked. But he seems in the film only to be good and evil. There is no important reason for him to be there. There is no great reward. He’s just the next obvious character to add to the mix, as he was teased in the previous film.
Later, Fox McCloud left Star Fox is presented. And, as voiced by Glen Powell, he gets a great introduction and a high-profile role to play in the story. But do you need to be there? It presents this famous Nintendo character in any way that complements other than “Oh, look, it’s Glen Powell as an outcast. Star Fox“? Not at all.

Mario and Luigi look at the movie the same way. They follow Peach and Toad the whole time, hang out with Yoshi, whom they readily accept, and always react rather than act. The film is named after them, however, they are only there to support the story behind the story. They are flying in the movie by the seat of their pants for no reason behind it.
But, in the end, that’s what these movies are. It’s a bag that adults can put on an iPad to distract kids while they’re eating at a restaurant. Which is good! If you liked the first movie, you’ll probably like this one. The film is loud and bright and, surprisingly, very good. But it’s useless and crazy about enjoyment or commitment outside of basic, high-level things.
That is especially evident when the film tries to dive two inches below the surface. That first comes with the relationship between Bowser and Bowser Jr. We don’t know the dynamic between these two, but the characters sit there and talk about it for about three minutes as casually as you can imagine before jumping back into the action. The same is true of the strange relationship between peach and Rosalina. It was established, quickly explained, but never discussed or developed further. Both situations feel like the filmmakers are forcing an emotion into the film just to say it’s there. They even deleted one of them completely near the end, disappointingly.

However, there are more difficult times Super Mario Galaxy Movie that really works. Yoshi’s first game is told with great flair. The exciting scene near the end brilliantly captures the power of video games. And I’d be lying if I didn’t know a little bit about old-school Nintendo references, like ROB the Robot, Kung Fu, Pro Wrestling, Excitebike, and the aforementioned Super Scope. They may not add anything, but they still bring a smile to my face.
However, that smile eventually faded. Mario and Luigi get their powers, save the day, and the movie ends so suddenly that it will make your head pound. It was almost easier to roll the credits than to get the characters to interact or finish. Or,that there wasn’t much to talk about or finish at all. That’s the way things are Super Mario Galaxy Movie. It’s not here to make you feel anything. It knows nothing about nostalgia. It’s a movie designed to assault your emotions for 90 minutes, and it does so with a vengeance. We just wish it could do anything more.
Super Mario Galaxy Movie viewed on April 1.
